Congress MP from Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, on Wednesday, May 28, demanded a thorough investigation into alleged illegal coal mining activities and syndicate operations in Assam and Meghalaya. Gogoi has recently been appointed as the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
Addressing a presser in New Delhi, Gogoi said, “On April 24, the ED conducted raids at multiple locations across Assam and Meghalaya. In a press release, the ED stated that an illegal coal syndicate is operating in both states. During the searches, authorities seized Rs 1.58 crore in cash, digital devices, and two high-end vehicles. We initially welcomed this action, as the Congress party has consistently raised this issue both inside and outside the House.”
He added, “The ED’s findings have effectively proven the Assam Chief Minister wrong, as he has repeatedly claimed that no illegal coal mining is taking place in the state. A central government agency has now contradicted his claims with concrete evidence.”
“We demand a CBI inquiry into this matter. Such illegal operations could not have thrived without political protection at both the state and central levels. There are indications that politically influential individuals may be involved, which makes an independent and thorough investigation by the CBI absolutely essential,” the MP said.
