Glenn Maxwell retires from ODI cricket, available for T20 World Cup

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 13-year career in the 50-over format. The 36-year-old made the decision during Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, which concluded with a semi-final defeat to India in Dubai.

“After much thought, I’ve decided to retire from One Day International cricket. Wearing the Aussie colours in ODIs has been one of the greatest honours of my life. From debuting in 2012 to winning a World Cup on home soil in 2015 and being part of another incredible campaign in 2023, I’ve made memories that will stay with me forever,” Maxwell wrote on Instagram.

He added, “To my teammates, coaches, family, and fans – thank you for the endless support and belief over the years. It’s meant the world. I’m not done yet… I’ll still be pulling on the green and gold in T20s, and I’m as hungry as ever to help Australia chase more success in the T20 World Cup next year.”

Maxwell, who made his ODI debut in 2012, was a key part of Australia’s World Cup-winning squads in 2015 and 2023. He revealed that he discussed his retirement plans with Australia’s selection committee chair and former teammate George Bailey during the Champions Trophy.

Reflecting on his final tournament, Maxwell admitted to being disappointed with his performances, saying he felt he had let the team down in his middle-order role. His decision also comes after a difficult stint with the Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, which was cut short due to injury.
