In a significant move aimed at rationalizing toll charges and ensuring fair pricing for commuters, the central government has proposed a new policy to reduce toll rates by 50% on highways where more than half the stretch comprises elevated roads, bridges, flyovers, or tunnels.
Previously, drivers were charged 10 times the normal toll on these stretches; the new policy will cap that premium at 5 times the standard rate.
This proposal is currently under review and implementation is expected soon. Once approved, toll booths on relevant stretches will start applying the new, reduced rates.
The halving of toll premiums on structured highway stretches is a major step toward equitable infrastructure usage. It ensures commuters don’t pay excessive fees simply for crossing bridges and elevated corridors. When combined with pass schemes and lane-based toll exemptions, the central government’s reforms signal a fairer, more commuter-friendly approach to highway financing.
