Just a day after withdrawing from the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, US President Donald Trump stated that the militant group had shown no genuine interest in reaching a deal on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. He added that Hamas leaders would now likely be “hunted down.”
Trump’s comments followed the announcement by his Middle East peace envoy, Steve Witkoff, who confirmed that the administration had recalled its negotiating team for consultations after reviewing Hamas’ latest proposal.
Both the United States and Israel withdrew their delegations from the talks in Doha, which were being mediated by Egypt and Qatar, signalling a major setback in efforts to broker a truce in the ongoing conflict.
