Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, July 16, responded strongly to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s alleged remark that Sarma would “definitely be sent to jail,” made during a closed-door meeting with the Congress Political Affairs Committee in Assam.

Taking to X, CM Sarma countered the claim with sarcasm, stating, “Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail — these were the exact words spoken by the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. He came all the way to Assam just to say this, conveniently forgetting that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases registered across the country.”

Sarma further extended his “best wishes” to Gandhi and invited him to enjoy Assam’s hospitality for the remainder of his visit.

Dismissing the significance of the Congress leader’s one-day tour, the Chief Minister added, “Now that he has lost the election, why should I spend my time on him? He is not that important anymore. He lost, and after that, he kept losing a series of elections. So why should I waste my time on him?” Sarma told NDTV.

The exchange comes amid heightened political tensions in Assam, where the Congress is looking to regroup following electoral setbacks.
