Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Manipur on Saturday, September 13, urged all groups in the state to abandon violence and choose peace, calling it the only way to “secure the future of their children.” This was Modi’s first visit to Manipur since the 2023 ethnic clashes, which claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands of residents.
Addressing a public gathering in Churachandpur, one of the worst-affected districts, the Prime Minister said peace was crucial for the state’s development. He highlighted recent successful negotiations with groups from both the hills and valleys, assuring the people that the Centre stood firmly with them. “I appeal to all organisations to move forward on the path of peace and fulfil their dreams. I promise you that I am with you; the Government of India is with you, the people of Manipur,” he said.
Modi also visited relief camps to meet those impacted by the violence and expressed optimism about the state’s future. Calling Manipur “a land of hope and aspiration,” he said a “new dawn of hope and trust” was emerging and encouraged the people to work together to rebuild peace and harmony.
