Indian railways have always allowed data change for offline tickets.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Indian Railways is set to introduce an online facility that will allow passengers to change the date of their reserved tickets. The service, expected to launch by January 2026, marks a major step in the Railways’ ongoing efforts to digitise services and enhance passenger convenience.

At present, passengers can change their travel date only through offline channels by visiting ticket counters at least 48 hours before departure and paying a prescribed fee. The new digital system aims to simplify this process, reducing long queues and congestion at reservation counters while saving time for travellers.

According to ministry reports, officials have been directed to develop and implement the online date-change mechanism by early next year. The upcoming system will closely follow the procedures of the current counter-based model to maintain reliability and continuity for users, forming part of a broader push to strengthen digital services within the Railways.
