India has maintained its position as the world’s largest market for electric three-wheelers for the second consecutive year, with sales climbing nearly 20 per cent in 2024 to reach approximately 700,000 units, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
In its Global EV Outlook 2025, the Paris-based agency highlighted India’s continued leadership in driving the expansion of the global electric three-wheeler (3W) segment.
While the overall global three-wheeler market saw a 5 per cent decline compared to the previous year, electric three-wheeler sales grew by more than 10 per cent , surpassing the one million mark in 2024. Electric models now account for nearly one in four three-wheelers sold globally, up from one in five in 2023.
The market remains heavily concentrated, with India and China together making up over 90 per cent of global sales – both electric and conventional – of three-wheelers.
“Electrification of three-wheelers in China has plateaued at below 15 per cent for the past three years,” the report noted. “India surpassed China in 2023 to become the largest electric three-wheeler market in the world, and it held that lead in 2024, with strong year-on-year growth.”
