PM Narendra Modi expressed India’s readiness to offer full assistance to Myanmar and Thailand following a powerful earthquake that caused widespread destruction and loss of life in both countries earlier in the day. The tremors were also felt in several Indian cities, including Kolkata and Imphal.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi conveyed his concern, stating, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, followed by an aftershock of 6.8, struck central Myanmar at 12:50 PM (local time) on Friday, March 28. The epicenter was located 16 km northwest of Sagaing city at a depth of 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey. While there have been reports of casualties, no tsunami warning has been issued.
On the other hand, the Embassy of India in Bangkok has issued an emergency contact number for Indian nationals in Thailand following a strong earthquake centered in Myanmar that also shook neighboring Thailand. Indian citizens can reach the emergency helpline at +66 618819218 in case of any emergencies.
