The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will offer sleeper berths, state-of-the-art safety features, and modern facilities, designed to enhance the comfort and efficiency of long-distance travel.

Indian Railways is preparing to launch the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express later this month, ahead of the Diwali rush. The new service aims to transform overnight train travel by combining speed, comfort, and modern amenities.

The train has been built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) using Integral Coach Factory technology. Unlike existing Vande Bharat services that offer only chair-car seating, this version is fitted with sleeper berths. Designed for a top speed of 180 km/h, the train is expected to reduce travel times significantly on one of India’s busiest routes.

According to reports, the service will run between Delhi and Patna with a scheduled halt at Prayagraj. The train is expected to depart Patna at 8 pm and reach Delhi by 7:30 am, cutting the journey to just 11.5 hours. At present, trains on the same route take anywhere between 12 and 17 hours, while the Rajdhani Express takes nearly 23 hours.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will feature aircraft-style interiors and several passenger-friendly upgrades. Coaches will be equipped with CCTV cameras, LED infotainment screens, automatic sensor-based doors, advanced fire safety systems, and bio-vacuum toilets. The train will offer First AC, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier options, with facilities such as USB charging ports, disabled-friendly access, and hot water showers in premium coaches. Safety will be enhanced through the installation of anti-collision systems, crash-resistant structures, and the Kavach technology.

Fares are expected to be 10 to 15 per cent higher than the Rajdhani Express, though still significantly cheaper than flights on the same sector. Officials argue that the improved comfort and reduced travel time justify the higher pricing.

The launch is expected to ease festival-season congestion on the Delhi–Patna corridor, which experiences heavy demand during Diwali and Chhath. The sleeper version also marks an important step in Indian Railways’ long-term plan to modernize overnight travel. More routes are likely to be added in the coming years, with potential destinations including Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Howrah.
