PM Narendra Modi on Thursday, July 24, lauded the transformation of India’s ports, noting how they are evolving into global commerce hubs through systematic expansion, mechanisation, digitisation, and a strong push for Ease of Doing Business.
Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Modi emphasized the growing international collaboration and investment in India’s maritime sector
“Union Minister Shri @sarbanandsonwal highlights how India’s ports are evolving into global commerce hubs through expansion, mechanisation, digitisation and Ease of Doing Business,” the PM wrote. “Major shipbuilding companies are now partnering with Indian firms, paving the way for more jobs and investment.”
In his post, Sonowal had detailed how the last decade, under Modi’s leadership, has been transformative for India’s maritime infrastructure and global standing.
“Wrote on how a transformative decade led by the vision of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji has made India into a preferred maritime destination for trade, innovation and investment,” the Union Minister stated.
Highlighting key achievements, Sonowal noted that India’s share in the global seafaring workforce has risen by an impressive 200%, reflecting both enhanced training capabilities and international trust in Indian maritime professionals.
India’s major ports—Visakhapatnam, Mundra, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), and Kamarajar—have climbed significantly in global port rankings, thanks to continued investments in capacity expansion and the integration of smart port technologies.
Sonowal also stressed that the focus is not only on physical infrastructure but also on human capital and cultural heritage. Ports are being reimagined not merely as logistical nodes, but as modern gateways for global commerce—symbolic of a rising India on the maritime map.
This comes amid a broader national vision to make India a global maritime powerhouse, positioning its ports as strategic assets in both economic and geopolitical terms.
