India witnessed a record surge in renewable energy installations in the first half of 2025, providing renewed momentum toward its 2030 clean energy target.
Between January and June, the country added 22 gigawatts of renewable capacity—a 56% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority.
With this boost, India’s total clean energy capacity—including large hydropower and nuclear—has now overtaken its fossil fuel capacity. This milestone strengthens the country’s push to achieve 500 gigawatts of non-fossil energy by 2030, a goal that had previously drawn skepticism due to earlier delays in implementation.
