Japan plans to nominate former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, joining a growing list of countries backing the move, the White House confirmed on Tuesday, October 28.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced her intention to formally recommend Trump for the prestigious award, citing his efforts to promote peace and stability in various global regions during his presidency.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting in Tokyo, Takaichi praised Trump’s role in mediating international conflicts and initiating ceasefire negotiations. “In a short period, the world witnessed more peace under your leadership,” she said, calling the former president’s diplomacy “inspirational.”
Trump, currently on an Asia visit, held talks with Takaichi on trade, rare earth minerals, and regional security cooperation, as both nations reaffirmed their strategic partnership.
Japan’s decision follows similar nominations from Pakistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Cambodia, all crediting Trump for his diplomatic initiatives and peace-brokering efforts.
If accepted, Japan’s proposal will be submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which will consider all official nominations for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
