TMC hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government for not implementing the anti-rape bill

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday, June 27, strongly condemned the alleged gang rape of a student inside a law college campus in South Kolkata, assuring that “justice will be served”.

In a post on X, the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee-led party took to X and said, “We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College.”

“@KolkataPolice have swiftly apprehended all 3 accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty,” it added.

The TMC has reiterated its demand for the immediate implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill, a legislation introduced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following last year’s RG Kar rape case.

The party asserted that the proposed bill is essential for establishing a “strong deterrent against sexual offences,” stressing the urgent need for timely investigations, fast-track trials, and stringent punishments.  riticising the BJP-led central government, the TMC accused it of failing to act on the bill and delaying its implementation, which the party says is critical for ensuring justice and preventing future crimes against women.

A 24-year-old woman has accused three men, including a prominent leader of the TMC student wing, of gangraping her inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College. The incident allegedly took place on the evening of June 25 between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm in the college’s security guard room.

The prime accused has been identified as Monojit Mishra (31), a criminal lawyer practicing at the Alipore court and a former president of the TMC youth wing. Mishra currently serves as the general secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). Two others – Zaib Ahmed (19), a first-year law student and Pramit Mukherjee (20), also a student – have also been arrested in connection with the case.

According to the woman’s complaint, she had come to the college around noon on June 25 to submit examination-related forms. She initially waited inside the college union room. Later that day, Mishra allegedly ordered the main gate of the campus to be locked before dragging her into the guard room, where the assault took place.

In her detailed FIR, the woman claimed that Mishra, angered by her rejection of his marriage proposal – she told him she already had a boyfriend – orchestrated the crime with the help of the two students. She further alleged that the men forcibly confined her, undressed her, and raped her, while recording videos of the act to later use as blackmail. When she resisted and attempted to escape, one of the accused allegedly tried to strike her with a hockey stick, causing injuries.

“I touched his feet, but he didn’t let me go… They forced me into the guard room, undressed me, and started raping me,” she stated in her complaint.

Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway. All three accused are currently in custody, and further forensic examination and video analysis are ongoing.
