Incidents of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and related deaths have fallen sharply over the past 15 years, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha on August 12, 2025. According to Rai, violence has dropped by 81% and fatalities by 85% since 2010.
He credited the decline to the National Policy and Action Plan, launched in 2015, which reduced the number of LWE-affected districts from 126 in 2013 to just 18 as of April 2025.
Rai noted that tribal communities—often branded “police informers” by extremists—remain the primary victims of such violence. He said these marginalized groups have borne the brunt of the attacks, despite Maoists claiming to fight for their rights. The minister also highlighted ongoing government measures to address both underdevelopment and security challenges in affected regions.
Responding to questions from Congress MP Kalyan Vaijinathrao Kale, Rai reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating Naxal activities and ensuring the safety of residents in these areas. While acknowledging the continuing challenges posed by LWE, he stressed that significant progress had been achieved in recent years.
