Actor Katrina Kaif was announced as the global tourism ambassador for the Maldives

Actor Katrina Kaif has been named the Global Brand Ambassador for the Maldives, according to an announcement on social media by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), also known as Visit Maldives. The organization expressed its excitement in partnering with Kaif, a leading figure in the Indian film industry, to promote the island nation as a premier travel destination.

This high-profile collaboration comes during a notable shift in diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives, which had experienced tensions since January 2024. Kaif’s appointment aligns with Visit Maldives’ recently launched Summer Sale Campaign, aimed at attracting travelers to explore the country’s natural beauty, vibrant marine life, and luxury experiences.

The announcement also precedes an upcoming visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, scheduled for next month, further signaling a possible warming of bilateral ties. Kaif’s appointment as Global Brand Ambassador for the Maldives comes at a time of renewed collaboration between India and the island nation.

Recently, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel visited India to strengthen ties in trade, defense cooperation, and maritime security under the India–Maldives partnership. During the talks, India reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Maldives, emphasizing its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

In a significant gesture of support, India also extended a $50 million interest-free treasury bill rollover to assist the Maldives with its fiscal reforms and alleviate mounting debt pressures.
