The father of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the 24-year-old woman accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has strongly denied the allegations, accusing the Meghalaya Police of fabricating the case and demanding a CBI inquiry.
Speaking to the media following his daughter’s surrender in Uttar Pradesh, Devi Singh maintained her innocence. “My daughter is innocent. I trust her completely. She cannot do this. The two were married with the full consent of both families. The Meghalaya government has been lying from the beginning,” he said.
Singh claimed that Sonam reached a roadside eatery in Ghazipur on her own on Sunday night and called her brother, after which the police arrived and took her into custody. “She wasn’t arrested in Meghalaya. She came to Ghazipur herself. I haven’t even spoken to her yet. Why would she kill her husband? The police are making up stories,” he added.
Frustrated with the current investigation, Singh said the family would soon approach Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to request a CBI probe. “Once the CBI steps in, all those police officers in Meghalaya will end up behind bars,” he claimed.
Sonam’s mother, Sangeeta, echoed his sentiments, calling the allegations false. “These are baseless claims. There should be a proper investigation into what really happened,” she said.
Sonam was taken into custody after voluntarily surrendering at the Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur. Her surrender came nearly 10 days after her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, was found dead in a gorge in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya. The couple had reportedly arrived in the state for their honeymoon in May but went missing on May 23.
Confirming her custody, Meghalaya Police stated: “Sonam Raghuvanshi has voluntarily surrendered at the Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, and is currently in the safe custody of the Uttar Pradesh Police. Necessary legal protocols are being followed for her transit.”
As per reports, Sonam had allegedly been in a relationship with a man named Raj Kushwaha and plotted Raja’s murder with his help. Authorities claim she hired contract killers from Madhya Pradesh to carry out the murder during their trip under the pretense of a honeymoon.
A local tourist guide provided a crucial tip, informing police that the couple was last seen with three unidentified men on the day of their disappearance. On June 2, Raja’s decomposed body was recovered from a deep gorge, and their rented scooter was found abandoned in Sohrarim, with the keys still intact.
Meghalaya DGPIdashisha Nongrang, said Sonam played a central role in planning the murder and hiring the contract killers. So far, three suspects from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested in connection with the killing. A fourth suspect remains at large.
