A devastating mass shooting rocked midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, leaving five people dead, including a New York City police officer, and one person critically injured. The gunman later died by suicide, according to authorities.
The incident unfolded just before 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise office building on East 52nd Street. Police say the suspect, armed with what appeared to be an assault-style rifle, entered the building and began firing in the lobby, fatally wounding an NYPD officer and a woman. He then shot a security guard near the elevator banks before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he opened fire again, killing another individual.
The slain officer was identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant who had served with the NYPD for just over three years. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
In total, four people – including Officer Islam – were killed in the attack. A fifth victim remains in critical condition as of Monday night.
The shooter was identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas. Authorities confirmed that Tamura died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the skyscraper. His motive remains unknown, and an investigation is ongoing.
The office tower houses several major companies, including the National Football League, private equity firm Blackstone, and consulting giant KPMG. Emergency crews from the Fire Department of New York responded to the scene within minutes.
City officials have yet to confirm whether any of the victims were affiliated with the businesses operating within the building. Police are continuing to review surveillance footage and interview witnesses as they work to piece together the sequence of events behind one of the deadliest shootings in recent Manhattan history.
