In a significant effort to enhance connectivity in the North-East, Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, has now been connected to the national railway network through the Bairabi–Sairang line in the state.
Bairabi, located in the Kolasib district close to the Assam border, has been the sole railhead in Mizoram to date. Sairang serves as a satellite town of Aizawl, situated approximately 20 km from the city.
A high-ranking official from the Ministry of Railways indicated that the official inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang line is expected to occur after June 17.
“The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) will conduct the inspection of the project this week. Only after that can the inauguration happen, leading to the start of train operations. Barring a few sideworks, work on the line is almost complete,” the official said.
On May 1, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) successfully conducted a trial run to Sairang, representing a significant milestone. With this development, Mizoram is now the fourth northeastern state to have its capital city linked to the national railway network, joining Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
