The historic Kachharibari, ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, was vandalised by a mob following a confrontation between a visitor and museum staff at the Rabindra Memorial Museum in Sirajganj district.
The incident began when a visitor, accompanied by his family, was reportedly involved in a dispute with museum staff at the entrance over a motorcycle parking fee. According to reports, tensions escalated, and the visitor was allegedly confined in an office and physically assaulted by staff members.
News of the incident sparked public outrage, prompting local residents to form a human chain protest on Tuesday. Shortly afterward, a mob stormed the museum, vandalising the auditorium and physically assaulting a museum director.
In response, the authorities have temporarily closed the site to the public. The Department of Archaeology has formed a three-member investigative committee, tasked with looking into the matter.
The Kachharibari, where Tagore spent time during his tenure as an estate manager, remains a site of cultural and historical importance in Bangladesh.
