In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has been appointed as the new President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The announcement was made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, May 26.
The party’s official handle posted: “Hon’ble Congress President Shri @kharge has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee as follows, with immediate effect.”
Gogoi, a three-time MP from Kaliabor and the son of former CM Tarun Gogoi, replaces Bhupen Kumar Borah at the helm. His elevation is seen as part of the Congress’s strategic shift to revitalize its state unit with a more dynamic, nationally recognized face.
The Congress leader expressed his gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, and General Secretary Jitendra Singh for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. He also acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor, Borah, praising him for his dedicated leadership and significant contributions to the party during his tenure.
“I would not have been here without the guidance of my parents and the support of my family especially my wife and children. It is a blessing to work with so many dedicated and inspiring senior leaders and workers in the Congress party in Assam. Their wisdom, experience and dedication to the party has taught me many things. I look forward to work with my seniors and colleagues. In the days to come I will seek the blessings of the people of Assam. I am confident that together we can create a better future for our state (sic),” the MP posted on X.
The AICC also named three Working Presidents to support the new state leadership under Gogoi: Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar. Alongside this new leadership structure, the Congress has constituted key committees to steer its campaign machinery in Assam. Former APCC president Borah will head the Campaign Committee, senior leader Debabrata Saikia has been appointed to lead the Coordination Committee, MP Pradyut Bordoloi will chair the Manifesto Committee, and Rakibul Hussain will oversee the Publicity Committee.
Gogoi’s leadership comes at a crucial juncture as the Congress looks to consolidate its position in the state and mount a serious challenge to the BJP’s dominance under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in the 2026 Assembly polls.
