Nepal's 'Gen Z' protesters want former chief justice Sushila Karki as the interim prime minister

Nepal’s youth-led protest movement has chosen former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to head an interim government, according to reports.

The decision came after thousands of Gen Z activists held a virtual meeting to agree on a non-partisan leader to guide the country through its current political crisis. Karki, 72, is Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and is widely respected for her strong anti-corruption record.

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah was initially seen as the movement’s preferred candidate, but his lack of response prompted the group to rally behind Karki, citing her neutrality and integrity.

The announcement follows weeks of mass protests that forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. The army has imposed curfews and stepped up security after violent clashes left at least 20 people dead.

Karki is expected to begin talks with military and political leaders to form a transitional government in the coming days.
