For the first time ever in Northeast India, Assam’s Guwahati will host Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) matches this April.

Guwahati has been chosen as the ‘home’ venue for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), who will play their two matches at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. The RR will lock horns with the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals on April 5 and 8 respectively.

The franchise’s official Instagram handle on Tuesday (February 21, 2023) shared a reel for all its fans and cricket lovers. The video captures a glimpse of the Barsapara Cricket Stadium and it ends with a message: Guwahati see you soon!

The RR posted the reel with the caption, "IPL is coming to Assam (as promised) #RoyalsFamily | #HallaBol | #IPL2023 | #reelkarofeelkaro | #reelitfeelit | #explore.” It also used a red heart emoji in the caption.

The franchise used Assam singer Achurjya Borpatra’s popular song ‘Ram Chandra Ahise’ in the reel to express its excitement ahead of its Guwahati tour.

Tata IPL 2023 will be the sixteenth season of the IPL, a Twenty20 cricket league established by the BCCI in 2007. Gujarat Titans are the defending champions. The IPL 2022 saw 600 million (60 crore) people tune in, according to the BCCI. As the tournament set a viewership record in 2022, it grabbed the third spot among sports leagues behind the National Football League in the US and the Premier League in England. The Barsapara Cricket Stadium hosts both domestic and international matches. The 50,000-capacity stadium is the largest sports stadium in Northeast India. The recent matches played at the stadium include an India vs Sri Lanka ODI on January 10 this year, an India vs South Africa T20 on October 2, 2022, an India vs West Indies ODI in 2018 and an India vs Australia T20 in 2017. The IPL 2023 will be held from March 31. It will start off with a blockbuster clash between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad at Narendra Modi Stadium. A total of 70 league stage matches will be played over 52 days.
