PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday, June 27, while addressing party workers in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, questioned if triple talaq was inalienable from Islam, why it isn’t practised in Muslim-majority countries like Egypt, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. “The people who advocate Triple Talaq are vote bank-hungry people, and they are doing injustice to Muslim women... Triple Talaq destroy the entire family. Muslim-majority countries have also banned Triple Talaq. Recently, I was in Egypt...They abolished Triple Talaq around 80-90 years ago,” Modi said while batting for #UniformCivilCode (UCC). He added, “Today people are being instigated in the name of UCC. The country cannot run on two laws. The Constitution also talks of equal rights...the Supreme Court has also asked to implement UCC. These (Opposition) people are playing vote bank politics. This is why Muslim sisters and daughters, wherever I go, stand with the BJP and Modi.” The PM made the remarks while interacting with over 10 lakh booth-level BJP workers across the country during his Madhya Pradesh visit.
