Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, was arrested by U.S. authorities on July 4, 2025, following a joint extradition request from India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The U.S. Department of Justice formally notified Indian officials of the development.
The arrest comes as part of ongoing efforts to bring those involved in the multi-billion-dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud to justice. Nehal Modi is a key accused in the case and has been charged with one count of money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and one count of criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
Indian authorities allege that Nehal played a pivotal role in laundering the proceeds of crime for his brother, Nirav Modi, who remains in the UK and is also fighting extradition to India.
The PNB fraud, one of the largest banking scams in Indian history, involved fraudulent Letters of Undertaking and has led to a global crackdown on the Modi family’s financial networks.
