The NDA scored a sweeping victory in the 2025 Bihar elections, securing 202 of the state’s 243 Assembly seats.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday, November 17, submitted his resignation, stepping down just days before the scheduled swearing-in of the new NDA government on November 20. His move formally dissolves the current administration and clears the path for the formation of the next government following the NDA’s sweeping victory in the Assembly elections.

Final Cabinet Meeting Held

Earlier in the day, Kumar chaired what is expected to be his last Cabinet meeting of the current term. The Cabinet passed a resolution recommending the dissolution of the government, after which Kumar met the Governor to tender his resignation.

NDA Government to Take Charge on November 20

The swearing-in ceremony is set to take place at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, where Nitish Kumar is expected to take oath again as Chief Minister — marking what will be his tenth term in office. Senior leaders of the NDA, including national-level figures, are expected to attend the event.

Portfolio Talks Underway

With the NDA securing a commanding majority, internal discussions on the allocation of ministerial portfolios have begun. The Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to claim the largest share, with key allies including JD(U), LJP (RV), HAM-S, and RLM also expected to secure Cabinet positions.

A Major Political Transition

Nitish Kumar’s resignation sets in motion the formal transition from the previous government to a fresh NDA-led dispensation. His upcoming oath ceremony will further cement his status as one of Bihar’s longest-serving political leaders.
