Several schools across Kerala are embracing a new classroom seating arrangement inspired by a scene from the 2024 Malayalam film Sthanarthi Sreekuttan. The innovative setup, which positions students in a U-shaped semi-circle, is designed to eliminate the traditional concept of “backbenchers” and foster greater inclusivity.
In this arrangement, teachers are positioned at the open end of the U, enabling clear visibility of every student. Educators say this setup promotes better engagement and ensures no student feels left out or overlooked.
According to Times Now, Ramavilasom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVV HSS) in Valakom, Kollam, was one of the first to adopt the layout. The model has since been implemented in several other schools, including Pappinisseri West LP School and Andoor ALP School in Kannur, RCC LPS East Mangad in Thrissur, GHSS Tholanur in Palakkad, and NSV VHSS Valacode in Kollam.
The concept gained popularity after being featured in Sthanarthi Sreekuttan, the directorial debut of Vinesh Viswanath. The film, centered on four mischievous students, was released in theaters on November 22, 2024, and became available on streaming platforms on June 20, 2025.
