Just hours before the announcement of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on former US President Barack Obama, accusing him of receiving the prestigious award “for doing nothing” and for “destroying our country.” Trump also remarked that Obama was “not a good president.”
Speaking to reporters, President Trump highlighted his own efforts in “brokering peace in Gaza” and ending “eight wars,” but maintained that he was not driven by the desire for recognition. He expressed discontent that Obama had been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize only months after taking office, calling it an undeserved accolade.
Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, eight months into his presidency. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it recognized him for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
