Amit Shah introduces bills mandating removal of arrested ministers

Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, August 20, tabled three contentious bills in the Lok Sabha, proposing provisions under which the Prime Minister and chief ministers could be removed from office if they remain under arrest for 30 consecutive days. The move triggered massive uproar and slogan-shouting in the House.

The bills introduced were the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill. As they were laid before the House, opposition members protested strongly, with some tearing up copies of the legislation amid chaotic scenes.

The opposition has denounced the proposals as “draconian,” alleging that such provisions could be misused by the government to undermine opposition-ruled states through politically motivated arrests of ministers and chief ministers.
