Several reports claimed Oscars 2025 is on the brink of being cancelled due to the Los Angeles wildfires
The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have caused widespread destruction, resulting in evacuations and loss of life. Now, according to a report from ‘The Sun’, the Oscars ceremony may be cancelled for the first time in its 96-year history due to the ongoing crisis.
As per reports, the Academy is primarily concerned about appearing insensitive during such a tragic time, as many in Los Angeles are facing immense hardship.
In contrast to 2021, when the ceremony was merely postponed due to the Covid-19 induced global lockdown, this year, the Academy is considering cancelling the event altogether.
The Oscars’ organizing team, which includes prominent figures like Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg, is closely monitoring the situation. They have already developed a “contingency plan,” a move last seen after the 9/11 attacks.
If the Oscars proceed, the customary goody bags – valued at £140,000 ($171,000) – will be eliminated. Previously, these extravagant gifts included a Swiss Alps getaway, beauty treatments, high-end jewellery, and a £1,000 ($1,220) barbecue grill. However, the Academy has deemed such items “inappropriate” given the circumstances.
In light of the crisis, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the nomination voting period until January 17 and will announce the nominees virtually on January 23.
The wildfires have also affected numerous celebrities, including Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton, with many losing their homes. The death toll has reached 25, and the number is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
