Pakistan’s Cabinet on Tuesday, May 20, approved the promotion of Army Chief General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office cited by Reuters. The decision, made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, follows recent military exchanges between India and Pakistan.
State-run PTV reported that General Munir was elevated to the prestigious rank in recognition of his “exemplary role” during the recent conflict with India. As tensions escalated, Munir emphasized that while Pakistan prefers peace, it will not hesitate to act in defense of its sovereignty and national dignity.
Meanwhile, India has reiterated that Operation Sindoor remains active and warned of strong retaliation if provoked.
