Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assembly on Tuesday, November 25, that singer Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore was not an accident but “plain and simple murder.” He said the motive behind the killing would shock the people of Assam, although he refrained from disclosing further details at this stage. According to CM Sarma, even in its initial assessment, the Assam Police was convinced that the case did not amount to culpable homicide but was an act of deliberate murder.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved musicians and the voice behind iconic Bollywood and Assamese songs, died on September 19 while swimming near an island in Singapore. The artist, known for hits like Ya Ali, had been scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival, making his sudden death particularly shocking for fans across the region.
CM Sarma confirmed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already arrested seven individuals and questioned 252 witnesses. He added that one of the accused carried out the killing while others assisted, and that four to five people in total are likely to be booked for murder as the investigation progresses.
