Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday, August 29, that India and Japan are collaborating on the Chandrayaan-5 lunar mission, also known as the LUPEX (Lunar Polar Exploration) Mission. The joint mission, involving the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is scheduled for launch between 2027 and 2028.
Speaking in Tokyo, PM Modi highlighted that the partnership aims to strengthen cooperation in space research, foster innovation among industries and startups, and expand India’s capabilities in lunar exploration.
The LUPEX mission will focus on exploring the Moon’s south polar region, with both agencies contributing advanced technologies and research expertise. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in India-Japan space relations and reinforces both nations’ commitment to peaceful scientific exploration.
