PM Modi inaugurates Semicon India 2025; says smallest made-in-India chip will drive biggest change

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2025 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on Tuesday, September 2, declaring that India is ready to become a “full-stack semiconductor nation.”

“Our journey may have started late, but nothing can stop us now,” Modi said at the inaugural session. “The day is not far when the smallest chip made in India will power the biggest change in the world.”

Drawing a parallel with past global power dynamics, the Prime Minister underlined that while oil once defined economic strength, the 21st century belongs to semiconductors. “Oil was black gold, but chips are digital diamonds. Oil shaped the last century—today, the fate of the world rests on chips,” he said, emphasizing India’s readiness to lead this transformation.

Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also unveiled ‘Vikram,’ India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, alongside test chips developed through four government-backed projects—marking a milestone in home-grown innovation.

Modi reiterated his pledge that “Made-in-India” chips will enter the market by the end of 2025, signalling a turning point in the country’s semiconductor journey after years of delays.
