Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur tomorrow for the first time since violence erupted in the state in May 2023, the state’s chief secretary Puneet Kumar Goel confirmed. The visit, which had been the subject of speculation for several days, has now been officially announced.
Modi is scheduled to arrive in Churachandpur district from Aizawl, Mizoram, around 12.30 pm. During his visit, he will interact with people displaced by the clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, lay the foundation stone for development projects worth Rs 7,300 crore across Manipur, and address a public gathering at the Peace Ground. The choice of Churachandpur is notable, as the district was one of the worst affected by the violence that claimed at least 260 lives and forced thousands to flee their homes.
Following his programme in Churachandpur, the Prime Minister will head to the state capital, Imphal. There, he will inaugurate projects worth Rs 1,200 crore. By visiting both the Kuki-majority Churachandpur and Meitei-majority Imphal, Modi’s itinerary is seen as a move to send a message of balance and reconciliation to both communities amid ongoing tensions.
