PM Narendra Modi on Monday, August 25, held wide-ranging talks with his Fijian counterpart Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, marking Rabuka’s first official visit to India.
Following the meeting, the two leaders oversaw the signing of seven agreements to deepen cooperation in areas such as defence and security, health, capacity building, migration, and climate resilience.
The agreements include the establishment of a 100-bed super-specialty hospital in Suva, supply of dialysis units and sea ambulances, and the launch of Jan Aushadhi centres to provide affordable medicines. Both sides also agreed to collaborate on cybersecurity and data protection, draw up a joint defence cooperation plan to strengthen regional security, and expand partnerships on climate action and renewable energy through the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
Highlighting climate change as Fiji’s most pressing challenge, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to disaster response and sustainable development support. He also stressed the shared vision of India and Fiji for a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.
PM Rabuka expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, saying his delegation was “very impressed beyond expectations” and reaffirmed Fiji’s strong partnership with India.
