Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the plenary session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on Monday, shortly after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s opening remarks. In his speech, PM Modi strongly condemned terrorism, describing it as the “gravest threat” to humanity and urging member nations to adopt a strict policy of zero tolerance. He emphasized that no society or country can feel secure while extremism continues to exist.
Without naming names, the Prime Minister criticized nations that provide shelter or backing to terrorist organizations, warning that the world must not accept double standards in the fight against terrorism. His comments carried weight as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was present in the room during the address.
Referring to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, PM Modi said the incident reflected the “worst face of terrorism.” He questioned the silence of the international community on state-backed terrorism and asked, “Can open support for terrorism by some countries ever be acceptable to us?”
