India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests, the PM said

In a major sign that India-Canada relations are on the mend after reaching a historic low during former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure, Trudeau’s successor, Mark Carney, has extended an invitation to PM Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, scheduled from June 15 to 17.

PM Modi indicated his willingness to participate, saying he looks forward to meeting Prime Minister Carney at the summit.

Taking to X on Friday, June 6, PM Modi shared that he had received a phone call from the Canadian Prime Minister and expressed optimism about both nations working together with “renewed vigour,” grounded in mutual respect.

Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month,” the PM wrote on X.

He added, “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

This development marks a significant diplomatic moment, coming less than a year after bilateral ties soured dramatically over Trudeau’s 2023 allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.

The invitation also counters recent criticism from the Congress party, which had claimed that India’s apparent exclusion from the G7 summit was “yet another major diplomatic blunder,” following concerns over the U.S. allegedly being allowed to “mediate” in India-Pakistan matters.

The G7 includes the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Italy—seven of the world’s most advanced economies.
