Portugal reiterates its support for India's permanent seat in United Nations Security Council

Portugal has reiterated its support for India’s bid to secure permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs.

During a media briefing on the conclusion of President Droupadi Murmu’s two-day State Visit to Portugal, Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the two nations across various multilateral platforms, including the UN.

He noted that, during the visit, Portugal’s leadership reaffirmed its backing for India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council.

India has been a vocal advocate for urgent, long-awaited reforms to the Security Council, asserting its right to a permanent seat. India argues that the current structure of the 15-nation council, established in 1945, is outdated and does not reflect current geopolitical realities.

Lal further pointed out that Portugal plays a significant role in strengthening the India-EU strategic partnership, including engaging with Portuguese-speaking Lusophone countries.

President Murmu’s visit to Portugal, which marks the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, comes 27 years after an Indian president last visited Portugal.
