Kannada actor Ranya Rao has been sentenced to one year in jail in connection with a gold smuggling case, as per a recent order issued by the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) Advisory Board. The order, passed under preventive detention provisions, comes after an investigation linked Rao to a smuggling network under the scrutiny of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
Alongside Rao, two other accused—Tarun Kondaru Raju and Sahil Jain—have also been sentenced to one year of imprisonment under the same order. The COFEPOSA Advisory Board’s directive prohibits all three from applying for bail during the period of detention, reinforcing the seriousness of the charges and the preventive nature of the action.
The DRI served the COFEPOSA detention order to Ranya Rao on May 23, following sustained surveillance and evidence gathering in the case. The move signals a strong stance by enforcement authorities against smuggling networks and highlights the increasing focus on high-profile individuals allegedly involved in such activities.
