Prime Minister Narendra Modi

In a strong and unapologetic message, PM Narendra Modi declared that India would prioritize its national interests, even if doing so comes at a significant cost. His remarks, delivered at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, were widely seen as a direct response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian imports over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

Emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of India’s agricultural community, PM Modi said, “For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it.” His firm tone reflected a clear stance against external pressure, particularly from Washington.

The statement came just a day after the United States announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total to 50 per cent—the highest level imposed on any country by the U.S. so far. The move has sparked diplomatic tension, but Modi’s remarks made it evident that India intends to stand its ground in defense of its strategic and economic decisions.
