Renowned Assamese singer Gayatri Hazarika passed away on Friday, May 16, at the age of 44 at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati, Assam. She had been battling colon cancer. Her untimely demise has plunged the music fraternity and her fans into deep mourning.
Gayatri rose to prominence with her popular song ‘Xora Pate Pate Phagun Naame’ and went on to lend her voice to several beloved tracks, including ‘Tumi Kun Birohi Ananya’, ‘Jank Nasil Bonot’, ‘Xeuji Xopon’, among others.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media, with fans and several notable personalities expressing their grief and celebrating her contribution to Assamese music.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his profound sorrow over Gayatri Hazarika’s passing, acknowledging her as a gifted artist whose voice touched many lives. The official tweet from the X handle of CMOffice Assam reads, “HCM Dr @himantabiswa has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of renowned singer Smt. Gayatri Hazarika. Her soulful voice and enduring contributions to Assamese music will always be remembered. HCM prayed for her eternal peace and extended heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family.”
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on X, “I am deeply saddened to hear news of the untimely passing of the renowned singer Gayatri Hazarika. The enchantment of her melodious voice, which brought songs to life, will remain vibrant forever. Her departure is an irreparable loss to the cultural world of Assam.
