On Republic Day, the National Flag is unfurled and hoisted on Independence Day.

As India gears up to celebrate its 77th Republic Day on January 26, the nation comes together to honour the Constitution that came into force in 1950. The day is marked by a grand parade at Kartavya Path, featuring marching contingents of the armed forces, vibrant state tableaux, and spectacular air displays by the Indian Air Force.

A common question that arises every year is whether the National Flag is hoisted or unfurled on Republic Day. While the terms are often used interchangeably, they carry distinct meanings. On Republic Day, the Tricolour is unfurled, whereas on Independence Day it is hoisted.

Unfurling means the flag is already tied at the top of the flagpole and is ceremonially opened to display its full form. This reflects India already being a sovereign nation, governed by its Constitution. The unfurling is done by the President of India, the constitutional head of the country. In contrast, hoisting involves raising the flag from the bottom of the pole to the top and is performed by the Prime Minister on Independence Day, symbolising freedom from colonial rule.

The Republic Day 2026 unfurling ceremony will take place around 9 am, followed by the national anthem and a 21-gun salute. This year’s celebrations will be attended by European Union leaders, including President of the European Council Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as chief guests. The theme highlights national pride and self-reliance with “Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram” and “Samriddhi ka Mantra: Atma Nirbhar Bharat.”
