Indian tennis icon Rohan Bopanna announces retirement from Professional Tennis

Indian tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna has officially announced his retirement, bringing an end to an illustrious 22-year-long professional career. His final match took place at the Paris Masters 1000, where he partnered with Alexander Bublik. The pair bowed out in the Round of 32 after a close contest, losing 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 to the duo of John Peers and James Tracy.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most accomplished tennis players, Bopanna built his legacy on his booming serve, sharp net play, and remarkable achievements in doubles and mixed doubles. Over the years, he proudly represented India at multiple Davis Cup tournaments and Olympic Games. His career highlights include winning the 2017 French Open mixed doubles title with Gabriela Dabrowski, cementing his place as a stalwart of Indian tennis.

Reflecting emotionally on his journey, the 45-year-old took to Instagram, writing, “How do you bid farewell to something that gave your life its meaning? After 20 unforgettable years on tour, it’s time… I’m officially hanging up my racquet.” He recalled his humble beginnings, from chopping wood in Coorg to strengthen his serve, to playing under the lights of the world’s biggest arenas. He concluded by saying that representing India has been the greatest honour of his life, making his farewell both heartfelt and unforgettable.
