In a landmark foreign policy move, Russia has officially recognised the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, becoming the first country to do so since the group regained control in August 2021.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it had formally accepted the credentials of Gul Hassan Hassan, the newly appointed Afghan ambassador to Moscow. This act of diplomatic recognition marks a pivotal shift in international engagement with the Taliban regime, which has so far remained largely unrecognised by the global community.
“This step opens the door to productive bilateral cooperation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in an official statement, signalling Moscow’s intent to pursue closer ties with the Taliban administration.
The move is expected to have far-reaching geopolitical implications, potentially encouraging other nations to reconsider their stance on formal relations with Afghanistan’s current leadership.
