A Russian An-24 passenger plane carrying about 50 people has gone missing in the eastern Amur region, authorities confirmed on Thursday, July 24.

The aircraft, operated by Angara Airlines, was en route to the town of Tynda, near the border with China, when it lost contact with air traffic control.

According to the local emergencies ministry, the plane disappeared from radar screens just a few kilometres from its destination. Search and rescue operations are currently underway.
