Russia's far east rocked by rare volcano eruption after powerful earthquake

For the first time in 600 years, Russia’s Krasheninnikov Volcano has erupted — a rare geological event that experts say could be linked to the recent powerful earthquake in the country’s eastern region.

The eruption occurred on Saturday in the same area that served as the epicentre of Wednesday’s massive 8.8-magnitude quake, which prompted tsunami alerts across Japan, the Philippines, and parts of the United States.

“This is the first historical eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years,” confirmed Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), in a statement to Russia’s state-run RIA news agency.
