The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission’s September 1 deadline for Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls, observing that most voters had already been verified and that any extension could derail the election timeline

The Supreme Court on Monday, September 1, rejected pleas to extend the September 1 deadline for filing claims and objections in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls.

However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) assured the court that claims and objections would still be entertained after September 1, but only post finalisation of the electoral roll and up until the last date for filing nominations.

To aid voters, the court directed the Bihar State Legal Services Authority to deploy para-legal volunteers in every district. These volunteers will assist in submitting applications online, provide contact details to the public, and send confidential reports to district judges. The reports will later be compiled at the state level.

This comes as Bihar prepares for its upcoming assembly elections, with voter list accuracy emerging as a key issue.
