The Supreme Court on Monday, December 1, declined to extend the deadline for uploading details of Waqf properties on the UMEED portal, reaffirming that the six-month timeline set under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 will remain unchanged.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih stated that any individual or Waqf body facing technical difficulties or unable to meet the deadline must approach the designated Waqf Tribunal for relief. The court emphasized that granting a blanket extension would amount to altering the statutory provisions introduced by Parliament.
The plea for extension was moved by several organisations, which argued that the portal became fully functional only recently and that many state boards are still in the process of digitising records. The Court, however, reiterated that legal remedies are already available through the Tribunal mechanism.
With the ruling, the existing deadline for completing registration of all Waqf properties on the UMEED portal remains firmly in place.
