The second civil defence mock drill, titled ‘Operation Shield,’ which was initially scheduled for May 29 but postponed due to administrative reasons, will now be conducted on May 31, according to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday, May 29.
The drill will be carried out across all western states and Union Territories that share a border with Pakistan, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
The first nationwide civil defence exercise took place on May 7, just hours before the launch of Operation Sindoor. That initial drill exposed significant gaps in civil defence readiness across vulnerable areas. In response, emergency powers were activated, and financial support was provided through the SDRF.
Operation Sindoor was launched as a direct response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 casualties.
